The file type doesn’t determine the codec type – they’re different things. Download a few free codec packs and see if any of them are the one you need for your file. Or just try VLC -
just use vlc media player and be done with it. pain-free, hassle-free.
I always use a converter called Domino Video Converter Pro to convert my MKV video. Domino is very powerful and easy to use. It can convert MKV to almost all popular video formats. Besides, Just click one button, the conversion can be completed in a short time.
You can download Domino Video Converter Pro at their official site:
Windows 7 actually already includes the video codecs, but it doesn’t include an MKV splitter, but you can get the splitter for free from DivX.
You install the DivX Plus Tech Preview: MKV on Windows 7, and it will enable MKV playback in Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center, and even enable thumbnails for the files. Also, if you have an Xbox 360, it enables streaming of MKV to there, too.
Check it out for free here:
Again, what’s nice about this is you don’t have to install codecs… you’re just enabling what Windows 7 already has thanks to DivX using Microsoft Media Foundation.
